Ghost of the Rockies

Modeled after the legendary work of Lohr Woodworking, this live edge dining table is made of Ghost Maple and American Walnut. The base is a trestle construction using tusk-wedged through tenons.

The live edge top is a 200+ year-old maple that was clear-cut for a housing development in Ohio. It contains some very nice burl figure, bark inclusions, and even a couple antique nails of unknown origin embedded deep in the tree.

I am happy to bring new life to this outstanding tree. We use it daily.

A Learning Experience

This was one of my earliest woodworking projects, using an $89 8” bandsaw and a 35 year old Craftsman contractor table saw that I procured from a neighbor. Cutting a 10-foot section of 2.5” thick Walnut on that table saw was no joke.

I almost killed myself trying to cut that maple tusk on the table saw, and there’s still a hole in my garage wall to prove it :)

I would do a lot of things differently with this table if I could go back in time, but it’s an amazing piece that holds a special place in my and my wife’s hearts.

The project pre-dates my website by a few years.
