The Raven
Ravens are an incredibly impressive species, but more on that later.
This piece is crafted of solid Bubinga and West African Ebony hardwoods, two of the most prized woods in the world and my favorite combination of all. These are the natural colors of the wood with no stain or added color. The Ebony is black as night.
The Raven's eye is a Black Onyx gemstone. The stars are gilded with 24K triple gold leaf, while the carved moon is gilded with 22K gold leaf that is composed of 91% Gold, 4.5% Silver and 4.5% Palladium for color. I could not be happier with the moon.
The Raven is carved in 1.06" thick Ebony. The frame is 1" thick and 3/4" wide. Overall the piece measures 17.25" tall by 14" wide.
I love adding texture and depth in my work. The carved raven in this piece is inlaid to sit 7/8" proud of the background, while the branches are 3/16" proud and the moon is 3/8" proud.
The 3D affect of this design is great, especially with the raven raised above the frame.
Back to the inspiration for this piece, The Raven.
Ravens are one of the most successful species with their ability to thrive alongside humans in the modern world. They can be found in almost every biome on Earth, from the freezing Arctic to the hottest deserts.
Key to the success of ravens is their adaptability, though they are equally intelligent, flexible and opportunistic. They are fiercely protective of their nest and their young. They have been known to use tools and work cooperatively with other ravens to achieve their objectives.
In a world full of problems, Ravens are problem-solvers. Ravens win, it's what they do.
So while Ravens are often associated with dark themes and omens, that is not the spirit of this work.
I aspire to be like The Raven.
